OVERVIEW

Bridging Jira and SAP Solution Manager

At AirPlus, Jira and SAP Solution Manager played two very different but equally critical roles in the delivery process.

  • Jira was the central tool for agile execution, managing user stories, tasks, assignments, and day to day progress of development teams.

  • SAP Solution Manager was the backbone for SAP delivery governance - managing Work Packages (WP), Work Items (WI), documentation, and the creation of transports required by ABAP developers.

However, the two systems operated completely independently. User stories were managed in Jira, while delivery objects had to be manually recreated in Solution Manager to enable development and transport management. This disconnect introduced delays, inconsistencies, and unnecessary administrative effort.

Codemine was engaged to connect these two worlds.

Codemine designed and implemented a tailored integration that linked Jira user stories directly with SAP Solution Manager Work Packages and Work Items. The integration respected the purpose of each system: Jira remained the control center for agile work, while Solution Manager remained the system of record for SAP delivery and transports.

As part of the engagement, Codemine introduced an enhancement in Jira that allowed users to trigger the creation of a Work Package and Work Item in Solution Manager directly from Jira. With a single action, delivery objects were created, prefilled with the correct structure and data, and immediately ready for ABAP development and transport creation.

The result was a seamless delivery flow: agile planning in Jira, governed execution in Solution Manager.

CHALLENGES

/

CHALLENGES

AirPlus faced increasing friction between agile teams and SAP governance processes:

  • Jira and Solution Manager operated as disconnected worlds

  • Manual creation of SAP Solman Work Packages caused delays and inconsistencies

  • Developers lacked visibility into SAP delivery status

  • Architects and release managers had limited traceability from requirements to transport

  • Repeated administrative effort consumed delivery capacity

From a business perspective, governance existed, but at the cost of speed and transparency.

Why should agile delivery slow down because governance is manual?

SOLUTIONS

A tailored Jira - SAP Solution Manager integration was introduced, positioning Solution Manager as the governance backbone and Jira as the execution layer.

The integration enabled:

  • Automatic creation of SAP Work Packages and Work Items directly from Jira

  • Pre-filled, standardized delivery objects aligned with internal processes

  • Clear linkage between Jira stories and SAP delivery artifacts

  • Bi-directional status visibility without disrupting agile workflows

As a result, governance became embedded, not enforced.

RESULTS

Governance Without Slowing Delivery

By integrating Jira and SAP Solution Manager, AirPlus transformed delivery governance from a manual obligation into a natural part of the development flow.

Key outcomes included:

  • Significantly reduced manual effort
Automatic creation and synchronization of delivery objects eliminated repetitive administrative work for architects, release managers, and developers.

  • Faster transition from planning to execution
Work Packages and Work Items were available immediately, allowing teams to start development without waiting for governance-related setup.

  • End-to-end delivery transparency
AirPlus gained a clear, consistent view from Jira requirements through SAP delivery objects to transports, improving control without additional overhead.

  • Stronger compliance with less friction
Governance rules were enforced by design, not by manual checks, reducing risk while preserving agile team autonomy.

Overall, AirPlus achieved a better balance between speed and control enabling teams to deliver faster while maintaining the rigor required in an SAP landscape.
